HESHIMA YA BINTI

(DIGNITY OF A GIRL)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

To provide free reusable sanitary pads  to rural girls secondary school students to manage menstruation and hygiene in Missenyi and Bukoba rural districts, Kagera region, Tanzania

BACKGROUND

Most young female students in the rural areas of Tanzania face great challenges in terms of menstruation and hygiene management. In rural areas, girls who are menstruating face problems compounding the difficulties posed by the inability to access to sanitary products or they know very little about the types and method of using them or are unable to afford such products due to high cost as well as cultural taboos around menstruation. As a result rural girls miss classes on average of four days of school every month which is over a month in a year, meaning they fall behind in class and sometimes even drop out of school altogether. This is an added challenge to the already existing problems that led to the high drop out rate of female students in secondary schools. Therefore, despite education being free for primary and secondary schools in Tanzania, menstrual has been identified as one of the leading causes to drop out of school for most rural girls.
